DeProspo Family

What you leave behind is not what is engraved on stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others.

It is with great appreciation that I acknowledge the work of Tony LaBriola and Stephen Marinaccio who have shared their information so generously.

Stephen wrote to me, "I imagine that you are Carol DeProspo the daughter of Joseph. You are my 5th Cousin twice removed, and my 7th cousin once removed (twice). I have all of your family info back to the early 1700's and some branches even earlier. Your ancestors' surnames include Bertone, Magone, Lombardi, Patierno, Marinaccio, Mottola, Nigro, Cirignano, Mauriello, Stabile, Raffa, DeProspo, Santoro, Rosamino, Saburro, Membrino, Ferritto, Longo, Cocco, Dioguardi, Lavista, Giovanelli DeRienzo Labriola."

"From what it looks like your direct ancestors include just about every surname found in Savignano"

The information contained in these pages is the result of the work of Tony and Stephen over the span of many years. The research is on-going and I am open to welcome additions and/or corrections.

Savignano Irpino, Italy - History

Savignano dominates the beautiful valley of Cervaro and has Samnite origins. It is mentioned in documents of the 7th century and in the writings of Capecelatro. The Savignano Hills lords of Savignano, Greci and La Ferrara from 1074, until Charles I d’Ajou, were all Normans, descendants of the Altavillas. The land passed to the Spinelli's who held Savignano until 1445. Then there was the family of Francesco Sforza, and after came Inigo Guevara, Great Seneschal of the Reign of Napoli, also Marques of Vasto and Count of Ariano, Potenza and Apice. The Guevara were an ancient and noble Spanish family, faithful to king Alfonso d’Aragona.

Savignano Irpino Coat of Arms
The title of Count of Savignano to the Guevara was conceded in Madrid on May, 29, 1700. First count of Savignano was Carlo Antonio II Guevara, son of Giovanni IV Guevara, Duke of Bovino. Savignano was part of the Principato Ulteriore and was called Savignano di Puglia until 1963, even though it belonged to the province of Avellino.
